A thirty minute counselling session (not role play) by BACP and UKRC registered counsellor Birgit Kuypers shown in full. There is a brief introduction to the core conditions of the therapeutic relationship, and a subsequent consultative evaluation with Susan. The video provides a useful tool demonstrating the creation of an effective therapeutic climate comprising empathy, unconditional positive regard and genuiness.

This video is not a role play. Susan and Birgit think it is important for
students to see the reality of a counselling session, which in their experience
may not always take dramatic turns. From their teaching experience they feel
that students often have difficulties in practice sessions staying with the
client's material. What their video endeavours to demonstrate is the discipline
of tracking the client, moving
at their pace and not pursuing the counsellor's agenda with some cathartic
release.
Some criticisms of this video have been about the 'middleclassness' of the material and setting. As trainers, Susan and Birgit feel strongly that students need to be able to work with all types of clients, and with material which might seem trivial to the counsellor; and to be able to respect differences. Birgit demonstrates this throughout this video by consistently tracking her client and staying with her material. She is aiming to communicate to the client that she is trying to perceive her world as she sees it, and to offer to be with her within it.
